CAA COMES INTO EFFECT IN
INDIA
Today marks
the implementation of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in India.
The law, which was passed in December 2019, has since been the subject of protests,
with many citizens and politicians expressing concern over its potential
impact. The CAA is a law that seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees
from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who came to India before December
31, 2014. The law sparked controversy because it left out Muslim refugees,
allegedly making it discriminatory. The passing of this law created a wave of
protests across the country, with Indian citizens fearing the erosion of
secularism and the marginalization of minorities.
The Modi government has long defended the CAA, claiming it is necessary to grant citizenship and protect the rights of persecuted minorities from neighboring countries. The Notification declaring the law going into effect was issued on January 10, 2020, and the government has maintained its position despite ongoing protests and concerns raised by the international community. The CAA's impact has been far-reaching, with protests in India and beyond. Critics claim that the new law is an attempt to undermine India's secularism and citizenship-based on religion, violating the Indian Constitution by discriminating against Muslims who have been living in India for generations. The Indian government has argued, however, that the CAA is a humanitarian law aimed at helping those who are being persecuted in neighboring countries by granting them citizenship in India.Despite the government's position, the law has left many Muslims in India feeling vulnerable and disenfranchised, potentially eroding India's proud history of secularism.
