ARTICLE

       Article is the smallest unit of English Grammar .  

                  There are two types of Article

1. Indefinite Article (A & An)

2. Definite Article   (The)

 

    1.                  INDEFINITE ARTICLE

      

    INTRODUCTION  :  It is the type of Article that  is used before Singular Countable Noun and not definite word.

                                                  

                                  There are two type of Indefinite Article

(i) "An" : It is used before singular countable noun and pronunciation of vowel sound .( अ- अ:)

 

Ex-

         an elephant  , an ox ,an ideal man ...............etc.                               आ

 More Examples:

an emergency an American

an automobile

an airplane

an ant an ice-cream

an ambulance

an offer

an equipment                      

 ii)" A ": It is used before singular countable Noun and pronunciation of consonant sound.(क- ज्ञ)

Ex- 

      a boy, a pen , a girl................etc

Note:(I)  Indefinite Article shows indefinite           persons or things. 

        (II) The use of a/an depends on the pronunciation of the word. 

Examples:

He is an honest boy. 

He died without an heir. 

This is a useful book. 

He was an M. P. . 

There was a mango tree. 

2.                          DEFINITE ARTICLE

It shows definite person or things thats mean shows particular persons or things. 'The' is called 'Definite Article'. 

 Examples:

The boy who is standing is my friend. 

Open the door. 

He reads the Ramayan daily. 

                          Uses of 'The'

I. It is used before the name of river, canel, sea and ocean. 

The Ganga, The Yamuna

The Swez Canel, The Sharda Canel

The Red Sea, The Dead Sea

The Pacific Ocean, The Indian Ocean

Example:

The Ganga is a holy river. 

II. It is used before the name of religious texts(धार्मिक ग्रंथ) and Religious community(धर्मिक समुदाय) . 

The Ramayan, The Geeta, The Bible, The Quran

The Hindus, The Muslim

III. It is used before the name of train, Aeroplane(हवाई जहाज ) or sea ship(समुद्री जहाज). 

The Rajdhani Express, The Garib Rath

The Sukhoi, The Miraj

The Vikrant, The Titanic

IV. It is used before the name of hotel(होटल). 

The Taj, The Oberai, The Kailash

V. It is used before the name of Geographic directions(भौगोलिक दिशाओं). 

The North, The South, The East, The West

Note: Directions name short keys

                   N- North

                   E-East

                  W-West

                  S-South

VI. It is used before the name of Dynasty(वंश) or Empire(समराजय). 

The Slave dynasty, The Mauray dynasty

The Mughal Empire, The Roman Empire

VII. It is used before the name of Armed Forces (सशस्त्र सेनाओ ). 

The Army, The B.S.F. , The C. R. P. F. 

VIII. The plural can be formed by using The before an adjective.

Adj                    Plural Noun

Poor                 The Poor

Rich                  The Rich

Blind                The Blind

IX. It is used before the name of things of invention(अविष्कार के चीजों). 

The Computer, The Mobile, The Teliphone

X. It is used before the name of Musical instruments. 

The Harmonium, The Tabla

                            No Article

I. It is not used before the name of Subject or

language. 

Ex- Physics, Chemistry, Biology

Note:

The English     - अंग्रेज

The French     - फ्रांसीसी

I speak English. 

The English ruled over India. 

II. It is not used before the name of games. 

Cricket, Football, Tennis

III. It is not used before the name of Illness(बीमारी) 

Fever, Corona, Cancer

IV. It is not used before the name of Person or Place. 

Ram, Shyam, Sita

India, Pakistan, Patna, Bihar

Note:

Some places where used the Article'The'

The U.S.A., The U. K., The Punjab, The Yeman,The Sudan, The Philippines

V. It is not used before the name of festivals or seasons. 

Holi, Dewali

Summer, Spring, Winter

VI. It is not used before the uncountable Noun or Plural Countable Noun. 

Milk, Curd, Water, Oil, Gold

Books, Boys, Girls, Pens

VII. It is used before the name of Days or Months. 

Sunday, Monday
